I Was Born By The River…
May 8, 2008I have to make a power point for history about anything connected to the civil rights movement. I was watching a little bit of American Idol on Tuesday and 1 of the girls sang A Change Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. I have his cd but i haven’t listened to it for awhile, so i decided to do my powerpoint of civil right’s music. Like the songs and hymns the African Americans sang during that period. So listen to this song. It’s 1 of my favorites.

I did a paper on the Civil Rights some time ago. I included a song “Strang Fruit” showing the deplorable conditions in which the negro was brought over here.
Here is another super great one:

I love Sam and Dave. The Blues Brothers sang many of their songs. So did CCR.
Opps sorry. Sam Cook was not Sam from Sam and Dave. Brain cramp. However, I like his music. You hear it all the time by other artists. Spike Lee’s film Malcom X featured this song.
Did you know he was shot to death in a $3 hotel by a prostitute?
Pete Segar-We Shall Overcome
Joan Baez and Bob Dillon- Oh Freedom
Peter,Paul and Mary-Blowin in the Wind & If I Had a Hammer
I trying to remember some of the references I had.
There were church gospels too. “Wade in the Water, This Little Light of Mine. Now I have been singing that since I could walk I think. LOL
Well, ok… you will do great!
This little light of mine
im gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
i actually interviewed pete segar 1 time in 6th grade for this documentary i did on the KKK. he’s really old and i had a hard time understanding what he was saying.
i love the civil rights movement for some reason. i love the music, i love the determination, and i love the people in it. (yes, i know that sounds cheesy. shoot me.)
you should add us to your blogroll (if you want), we have you on ours.
=] panic.
You have got to be kidding me!!! You were 11 or 12 and he had to have been 83 or 84. OMG. How the heck did you get him to interview with you. Call him and say..hey this is peace out dude. I got some questions for ya?
He lives in New York I think.
well i had interviewed this activist named Heidi Howell (i think.. ) and she gave me his telephone #. I called him and got lucky. He was at this retirement center i think and he asked me some questions about what i knew already. i told him i liked his freedom songs and my favorite was Over My Head I See Freedom in the Air, so he let me ask him a few questions.
he even sent me an autographed book he wrote with Bob Reiser called Everybody Says Freedom. It has all the sheet music in it.
